Moving to Türkiye: a tax planning checklist before you relocate

Prepare your residence history, income map and departure-country questions before assessing Turkish tax treatment.

Start with your circumstances, not a headline rate

A useful relocation assessment begins with where you live, how you earn your income and which connections you will retain abroad. A Turkish exemption should not be treated as an answer to every tax obligation in every country. Our 20-year foreign-income exemption guide addresses the Turkish regime; your eligibility and the treatment of each income stream require individual review.

Prepare a residence timeline

List the countries where you have lived, your arrival and departure dates, homes available to you and where your family and work are based. Include existing tax registrations and planned travel after the move. Do not assume that buying a home or obtaining an immigration permission answers the separate question of tax residence.

For example, HMRC explains that leaving the UK can still involve UK tax obligations. The relevant departure-country analysis should be undertaken with an adviser qualified in that jurisdiction.

Build an income map

For each income stream, record the payer, country, activity producing it and where that activity takes place. Separate dividends, interest, rents, employment, professional services and proposed asset disposals. Note ownership through companies or other structures. This is a preparation list, not a conclusion that any category is automatically exempt.

Identify decisions that should wait for advice

Before changing ownership, selling an asset, paying a dividend or moving business management, obtain a coordinated assessment of the relevant countries. Ask whether timing changes the outcome and whether any filing, evidence or application deadline needs to be addressed before the move.

Include estate and succession questions in a separate workstream. An income-tax conclusion does not by itself determine inheritance or gift-tax treatment.

What the initial review should clarify

Agree which Turkish questions LP Legal will assess, which require advice in the departure country, what evidence is missing and which deadlines matter first. Any implementation should follow the agreed scope of work.

LP Legal starts with a short information note and an introductory meeting. In your first enquiry, give your current country of residence, intended moving period and broad income categories. Do not include account numbers or upload financial records in the initial form.
