Bank account in Türkiye without a residence permit

Documents, proof of address, a tax number and the questions to put to the bank before you travel.

Not having a Turkish residence permit does not in itself rule out opening an account. Much depends on the bank's requirements and on your documents. İşbank's official document list, for example, mentions a valid passport or, where available, a residence permit, together with an identification or tax number and proof of address. That list does not guarantee that a particular customer will be accepted. Check what the bank requires for your situation before you travel.

If the account is needed to buy an apartment, find out how it will be opened before you agree a payment date. An agent's promise to open an account in one day does not mean you will be able to pay the seller on time.

What to check in advance

Tell the bank your nationality, your country of residence and what the account is for. Ask whether it accepts applications without a residence permit, whether you need to attend in person and which proof of address it will accept. Ask separately about issuing a card, setting up the mobile app, international transfers and current fees. Opening an account does not automatically switch on all of these services.

Show the bank which documents you can use to prove your address. This matters most if you live outside Türkiye. Differences in how your name is spelled in your passport and in a translation are best resolved before you fill in the bank's forms.

Why you need a tax number

The Revenue Administration portal allows foreigners to apply for a potential tax number. The number works as an identifier. It is not a residence permit, a work permit or a bank's decision to open an account.

Do not confuse immigration status with tax residence. Holding a residence permit, a tax number or an account does not on its own answer the question of where you must declare your income. When you complete the bank's tax residence questions, answer on the basis of your actual circumstances, and get separate advice if the position is unclear.

If the account is for a property purchase

Before making a transfer, agree with the bank which documents it needs on the source of funds and the purpose of the payment. The sender's name should be checked against the buyer's details in the contract. Paying into an agent's personal account while your own account is being opened creates separate risks.

When you sign the bank's documents, ask for any unclear terms to be explained. Access to the account, passwords and confirmation codes should stay with you, even if a representative helps you prepare the application.

Can the account be opened entirely remotely?

This cannot be promised. Online banking access after the account is opened and the first identification of a new customer are different procedures. Check the current process with the bank you choose; İşbank's official page directs applicants to a branch.

If one branch refuses, will every bank refuse?

Not necessarily. First find out why you were refused: a missing document, or the bank does not accept applications in your situation. That tells you whether it makes sense to complete the file or to approach another bank. A positive outcome is still not guaranteed.
